Scaling It Up: Public Art

SCALING IT UP: a new public art project by Monique de Vlieger for the Harwich Festival of the Arts 2024.

Get creative and help make another colourful artwork to brighten up the Harwich quayside over the summer season.

This year we’ll be creating a large cod made up out of individual scales. The project will be looking back at the times when there were more than 60 fishing boats in Harwich and hundreds of people employed in fishing for cod.

To help create this large cod please make one or more scales out of fabric, see pattern which you can download below. If using thin fabric it might be a good idea to back it with a more firm material. The scales will partly overlap when put together, the shaded area will not be visible so no need to embellish this. If using beads or other hard materials please keep them away from the edges so that we can sew the scales together on the sewing machine. Colourful fabrics and shiny decorations will work best to create our fabulous cod.

Finished scales can be handed in at the Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre, weekdays between 10.00 and 16.00 and on the first Saturday of the month between 10.00 and 13.00. Closing date for the scales will be the 24th May.
