Against The Tide: Tendring Postcard Workshops

Workshop leader: Jayne Lloyd

Location: Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre

Aims and Objectives

To give young people the space and opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings about their coastal town and communicate their messages to others through photography.

For the young people to learn new skills in photography, gain confidence in making themselves heard and work together as a team.

Project overview

Across a series of 4 sessions, young people will come together to share their perspective on living in their coastal town; learn skills in photography to help them share their thoughts and work together to produce a series of postcards for exchange with young people in other coastal communities.

Session 1: Introductions, get started in photography and set the schedule for coming sessions. (2 hours early evening,, mid February)

  • Begin with an introduction to the project and opportunity for everyone to introduce themselves.
  • We’ll discuss areas of interest in photography and what they’d like to learn more about. Look at images, postcards and zines for inspiration.
  • Discuss thoughts and feelings about where they live and what living by the sea means to them. Highlight key themes they’d like to communicate through the project.
  • Agree a plan for the coming sessions based on what’s discussed. Think about communicating through images and how we’ll do that over the sessions.
  • Look together at the proposed photo walk route and agree the route together.
  • Look at equipment and discuss practicalities of photography.
  • Participants can start taking photographs prior to the second session and add them to a shared gallery for us to look at together if they’d like to.

Session 2: Practical session – photo walk and postcard design (4 hours afternoon, in February half term/on a weekend)

  • Start by recapping the previous session, share any images that have been submitted.
  • Brief review of goals for today’s session: to photograph what they’d like to share about their local area and select one image per participant to be printed as a postcard for the exchange.
  • Discuss ethics, safety and any technical questions before setting out.
  • Photography session in the local area.
  • Meet up to discuss progress, look at images and make selection of 1 image per participant to be printed as a postcard.
  • Think about themes and identify further areas to explore in upcoming sessions.
