Three times three – a trio of trios. That is the format for a top-class Jazz and Blues Day in the front bar of the New Bell Inn. The programme begins with a dash of local colour from a three-piece led by Harwich saxophonist Frank Weatherley, supported by Samuel Hollis on double bass and Seb Bloom on drums. They will be showcasing original compositions alongside one or two popular jazz standards.

Next up is Threeway, the long-standing trio led by West Yorkshire electric bassist Ben Crosland in the company of keyboard maestro Steve Lodder and trumpeter Steve Waterman, who together have collaborated with a whole host of top names on the UK jazz scene, from Andy Sheppard to John Etheridge, Henry Lowther to Art Themen, John Surman to Alec Dankworth. They will be presenting numbers from their brand new CD, Harken!, and their Harwich Festival date forms part of their UK tour promoting the album.

The evening closes with the eagerly-awaited return of young guitarist Connor Selby. Connor, who has been named UK Blues Awards Young Artist of the Year three times running and has rapidly ascended to the top of the pole on the British blues scene, was recently selected by Mark Knopfler to perform on his 60 Guitar Heroes extended recording of his classic tune Going Home in the company of such heavyweights as Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Bruce Springsteen and Slash. Connor brings with him none other than the mighty Stevie Watts on organ, recipient of this year’s UK Blues Awards Instrumentalist of the Year accolade, and Oscar Reynolds on drums.
