Millicent Clarke’s artist practice centres around the portrayal of the female form through a variety of media but with a focus on painting. For thousands of years the female form has been captured in paint from a male gaze perspective, the women captured have been objectified to please this gaze. Through Clarke’s paintings she wishes to give the power back to the subjects in her work. Whilst everyone may perceive the work differently Clarke wishes to portray figures full of feeling and self assurance whilst often subtly referencing and challenging the historical portrayal of women in art.
